Zinnia flowers make a spectacular sight, exploding with color! They are excellent as cut flowers!! Zinnias are annuals that last for one season, blooming from late spring through summer and until the first frost in fall. If you want zinnias every year, you will have to replant every spring. Give each plant plenty of space when setting them out as the hairy stems of zinnias are susceptible to powdery mildew. They will bloom continuously throughout the growing season as long as the spent flowers are deadheaded regularly. Due to their ability to grow so quickly, they can be direct-seeded. Zinnias perform better in garden beds than containers. Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to these flowers. They are deer and rabbit resistant. This plant is a fast grower with relatively low maintenance, can be grown in full sun, half sun/half shade and thrives in zones 2-11 (USDA). Most zinnias range in height from 6 inches (15 cm) to 4 feet (120 cm) and 1 to 2 feet wide. How to grow and care for Zinnias: Zinnias grow best in full sun, but need at least 6 hours of sun each day Although zinnias can tolerate short periods of drought, they grow best in moist, well-draining soil. Water about three times a week so that the soil stays moist to about 6 to 8 inches deep Fertilize at least twice during the growing season using a balanced granular or water soluble 20-20-20 fertilizer or a slow release fertilizer at the time of planting.
