Heliopsis helianthoides (Sweet Oxeye Sunflower) has the appearance of a miniature sunflower with a bloom that is sweet smelling and long lasting through most of summer and into early autumn. It is often grown as an ornamental flower in gardens and landscapes especially for its attractive flowers and foliage which attracts bees and humming birds. It is a herbaceous perennial plant from the Asteraceae family that is native to North America. Oxeye sunflower is hardy and easily grown as a showy garden perennial in dry sites and is a good choice for clay soil. It makes a good cut flower and is also a prolific self seeder.
This plant is relatively low maintenance, sun-loving, heat and drought-tolerant in hardiness zones 3-9 (USDA). The oxeye sunflower typically grows to be around 2-5 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide. It is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season.
How to grow and care for ox-eye false sunflowers:
● Give this plant as much full sun as possible.
● Grows best in moderately moist, well-draining soil.
● Don't fertilize - this will avoid leggy plants
